In 3 John 1: 9-12, we see two diametrically opposed leadership styles.  On the one hand, you have Diotrephes whose lust for control and power has caused him to speak maliciously about others for which he disagrees and forbid others to receive them as well.

On the other hand, you have Demetrius who has a testimony of servant leadership and humility.

Listen, we are going to have disagreements inside and outside the church.  However, it is how we handle ourselves in the midst of these disagreements that show our true faith in Christ.  Let me ask all of us to consider three things…

#1- Make sure that you have no King, but King Jesus.  This was a creed in the early days of our nation which has since gone by the wayside.  Now, it seems, everyone has a god complex and loves to seek personal glory at the expense of  others.

#2- Be willing to listen to what others are saying.  Even if you disagree, it helps others to know you are listening to them and will help them have more respect for your position as well.

#3- When you disagree, do so without being so disagreeable.  Why does a simple disagreement have to turn to hate.  Look for common ground and what you can agree on and start there.  Then, pray to ask God to change your heart or theirs to conform to the truth.  Love, not hate, wins more times than not.

3 John 1:11- “Beloved, follow not that which is evil, but that which is good.  He that does good is of God, but he who does evil has not seen God.”

  • Turning our problems into prayers…Nehemiah 1: 5-11

The book of Nehemiah stands near the end of history section of the Bible.  It records one of the three major waves of Jewish exiles who returned to Israel after the 70 years of Babylonian captivity. But, its main source is the life and leadership of the man who led this wave, Nehemiah.
