What must the suffering of Jesus been like?  The physical pain combined with the emotional turmoil and spiritual disconnect from the Father must have been an enormous load to bear.

Only by the Power of God’s Spirit could He overcome, and overcome He did.  He remained true to His mission of offering Himself as the Savior of the world.

What are you dealing with today?  Peter wrote in 1 Peter 2:21 that Christ suffered not only so that we could be made righteous, but also has an example.  God knew that in this world we would face turmoil, sickness, pain, and death.  But, King Jesus came to conquer death, heal our hurts, and reconcile us to God.  Redemption is now at work in this dark world and will one day culminate in a new heaven and a new earth where sickness, pain, suffering, and death will be no more.

In the meantime, we follow One who has suffered like us.  He understands, relates, and is there for us to provide strength and hope.  Listen to the words of the Prophet Jeremiah as he encourages Israel in its darkest hour.  “Refrain your voice from weeping, and your eyes from tears; for your work will be rewarded…there is hope for the future, says the Lord.”

The book of Nehemiah stands near the end of history section of the Bible.  It records one of the three major waves of Jewish exiles who returned to Israel after the 70 years of Babylonian captivity. But, its main source is the life and leadership of the man who led this wave, Nehemiah.
