Ye Shall Be Made Free- John 8:33  Politics can be defined as dealing with people in an opportunistic, manipulative, or devious way.  Unfortunately, the church is not immune to politics.

Solomon wrote to everything there is a season and a time under heaven and this is certainly true regarding the issues of the day.  But, what do we as Christians, and as Baptists, need to remember?

#1- We are not united, but divided by our politics.  Friends, politics has never united anyone over anything except to tear other people down.  It is not the way of the Lord who prayed in John 17 that we would be one as He and His Father are one.  Nehemiah 4:6 tells us what unites us…the work of the gospel.  We must center ourselves on the work.  Anything else is a distraction.

#2-  Not every issue is a cause worth dying for.  Only the gospel is worth giving your life for.  Can you imagine reading in the book of Acts about men and women being martyred for their faith over the right to bear arms or #metoo. Never!  Only the gospel is worth giving one’s life too.  Does this mean these other causes are not worthwhile or important.  Of course not, but they should not take precedence over the work He has called us to do.

#3- Opinions are like armpits.  Everybody has one and most of the time they stink.  What do I mean by that?  I’m glad you asked!  In this age of social media and mob judicature, we must remember there is a system both in our nation and in the Scripture to deal with sin and wrongdoing.  To many times we formulate and share an opinion without knowing all the facts nor having the authority to decide the matter.  We are free to our opinion, but I ask you, do we always need to cast that stone at others?

#4-  In summation, there are actually two issues worth giving one’s life to uncompromisingly.  One, as mentioned above, is the gospel.  The other, is freedom.  If we ever lose either one, we will be giving away something truly rare and precious.  May we not cast our precious “pearls” to the political “swine”.-
