Isn’t it wonderful to know that in the beginning it was God that created everything we know and see.

I mean, beyond the faith you need to believe that all we see is just a result of a random accident and act of chance, it is also so impersonal and meaningless.  I like God’s Story much better.

It is found in Genesis 1-2 and is the foundational building block of all we believe and how we choose to live our lives.  In it, God takes much pleasure in creating the world in which we live, move, and have our being.  His crowning achievement and the apple of his eye is His creation of man and woman whom he has a personal relationship and intimate contact with on a daily basis.  All is perfect and there is no evil, no sadness, no pain, no want.

But, then Eve makes a choice that forever changes things.  She and her husband Adam reject God’s vision and embrace a self-centered version of existence where they run things and are their own gods.  As a result, God cast them out of the garden to be what they want and live according to the consequences of their choices.  That is a novel idea in this culture today isn’t it? There are consequences to the choices we make.  Some are for good, and some are for naught.  There is power in the choices we make each day.  This freedom of choice is a gift of God.  Even though he created Adam and Eve, he wanted them to choose Him.  The only way to legitimize this decision was to create a choice.

Now, some say if God really loved Adam and Eve, then he would have given them a second chance.  But, in reality, it was an act of grace that caused God to cast them from the garden.  In Genesis 3:22-23 we get hint of this.  God says, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, to know good and evil.  And now, lest he put out his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”-therefore the Lord God sent him out…  You see, if man had taken from the tree of life he would have lived forever in His sin separated from God.  That is what hell is like.  Instead, God hatched a rescue plan through His son Jesus Christ.  It is better to die once and be raised to newness of life than to live forever in our sins.
