ABC's of Becoming a Christian

"A" stands for Admit. A person must admit to God that she is a sinner. She must be sorry for her sin and turn away from sinning. Verses that support this step are Romans 3:23; Romans 6:23; Acts 3:19; and 1 John 1:9.

"B" stands for Believe. A person must believe that Jesus is God's Son and that God sent Jesus to pay the penalty for sin. Verses about believing include John 3:16; John 14:6; and Romans 5:8.

"C" stands for Confess. A person must confess her faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. Read Romans 10:9-10, 13.

After a person admits to God that she is a sinner, repents and turns from her sin, believes that Jesus is God's Son sent to die to pay for the sins of the world, and confesses that faith in Jesus, she is a Christian and knows Jesus as her Savior.

Remember: It is not your job to "save" your child - it is God's! However, as a parent you have the responsibility (and privilege) of guiding your child to faith in Christ. Pray that God will give you the wisdom to teach your child about Him. Then know that you can only do this with His help and thank Him for His guidance. After all, He loves your child even more than you do!

The following is a sample prayer to use as a guide for praying with your child:

Dear God, thank You for choosing to love me! I know I am a sinner. I believe You sent Your Son, Jesus Christ, to die for my sins. I believe He rose again and lives today. Today, I repent and turn away from my sin. Thank You for Your wonderful love and for changing my life forever. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.

Our History

Zion Hill Baptist Church has a notable history dating from 1873. The church's first building was made of logs and was built on the present-day Lewis Byrd farm. The first pastor was N.H. Haggard. The first Sunday School was organized in 1898 with an enrollment of 60. Sometime around the turn of the 20th century, a second church building, a one room structure, was constructed.

Church membership continued to grow at such a rapid pace, this building was outgrown in ten years, and a new building was constructed on the present church site. One example of this rapid growth occurred in 1909 during the pastorate of Rev. W.E. Conner when forty-four joined the church by baptism, and membership grew to 227.

In early 1943, the wooden church building burned. Church services were held in the Zion Hill Schoolhouse while a new building was constructed. By the fall of 1943, church services were held in the newly-completed basement, while the sanctuary was completed. The new brick building that now houses Zion Hill Baptist Church was dedicated in 1944 when Rev. J.L. Helton was pastor. The building stands as a testimony of the love for the Lord and the church members sacrificed greatly during wartime to give for the rebuilding. In the 1950's, the congregation continued to grow, and a three-story education wing was added.

Zion Hill has had many pastors through the years who have tried to lead the church to reach the community for Christ. That work is still ongoing under the leadership of Rev. Floyd Powell. Many members have served the church faithfully through the years. We are thankful for their sacrifice and dedication to ensure Zion Hill continues to stand as a beacon to the lost in the community.

  • Turning our problems into prayers…Nehemiah 1: 5-11

The book of Nehemiah stands near the end of history section of the Bible.  It records one of the three major waves of Jewish exiles who returned to Israel after the 70 years of Babylonian captivity. But, its main source is the life and leadership of the man who led this wave, Nehemiah.
